Clarence Glenn

THE FAMILY OF DR. CLARENCE GIBSON GLENN will host a memorial service in celebration of his life on August 18, 2012, at 11:00 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church, Decatur, IL. Family will greet friends 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at the church. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church or Donor's Choice. DR. GLENN died on the morning of August 9, 2012 at Decatur Memorial Hospital, where he had served as a member of the medical staff for more than sixty years. He started both EEG (electroencephalograph) laboratories in Decatur (DMH in Jan. 1952, and St. Mary's Hospital in 1958). He continued to be in charge of both labs until 1987, when he began developing sleep laboratories in both hospitals. Dr. Glenn studied sleep medicine at Deaconess Hospital in St. Louis, and received board certification in Sleep Medicine on January 28, 1991. He continued to read sleep records at both hospitals until 2009. He began his life on May 26, 1919, in Macon, Illinois, as the son of George and Leah (Wise) Glenn. He had one older sister, Charlotte. While an undergraduate at the University of Illinois, Champaign, Dr. Glenn met his wife, Adele Palmer. The couple celebrated 68 years of marriage in July. After receiving his medical degree in 1944, from the University of Illinois School of Medicine in Chicago, Dr. Glenn served as a physician aboard the U.S.S. Natoma Bay in the Pacific during World War II. He came to Decatur to begin a private practice in Internal Medicine and Neurology in July, 1949, but was recalled by the U.S. Navy to serve as Chief of Neurology at the San Diego Naval Hospital, 1956-58. Dr. Glenn and his family returned to Decatur but he focused his practice on neurology. Clarence was a member of the American Medical Association, a 50 year club member of Illinois State Medical Society, a member of Macon County Medical Society, the American Academy of Neurology, the American Epilepsy Society, the American EEG Society, the American Medical EEG Society, and the American Sleep Disorders Association. He was an active member and past President of St. Mary's Hospital Medical Staff in Decatur, active member and past President of Decatur Memorial Hospital Medical Staff, past President of Macon County Medical Society, member of Decatur Memorial Hospital Foundation Board and former member of St. Mary's Hospital Foundation Board. His past community activities included: Boy Scout physicals at the Boy Scout Summer Camp from 1950 to 1958, Board Member of the VNA and TB Association in the 1950's, Board Member of Decatur City Public Hospital in the mid-1950's, Board Member of the 708 Board in the 1970's, Board Member of the Woodford Homes Board in the 1980's (involved in developing living facilities for the disabled), Board Member of the Family Service Organization, Board Member of the Polio Foundation in Decatur in the 1950's, and also a member of the Draft Board for procuring Physicians, Pharmacists, and Dentists, and other related medical occupations. He was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church and was also a member of the Decatur Club and Country Club of Decatur. Dr. Glenn is survived by his wife, Adele; his daughter and son and their spouses, Susan Glenn and Rich Lampe of Olympia, Washington, and Rob and HR Glenn of Indianapolis; six grandchildren, Melinda, Rebecca and Thom Hardwick, and Kris and David Glenn and Jenny Horoho; five great grandchildren, Jackson and Carter Glenn, sons of David and Amy of Mahomet, and McKinzie, Owen, and Griffin, children of Jenny and Casey Horoho of Indianapolis. Dr. Glenn was known to many for his generosity and sincere care of patients. Those who knew him are invited to join in the family's celebration at the church to help sing his favorite song, "When the Saints Come Marching In." "
