Carla J. Spitzer, 71, of Decatur, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2024 surrounded by her family.
A Memorial Gathering will be 3:00 – 5:00 PM, Friday, May 31, 2024 at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur. A Memorial Service will follow at 5:00 PM, Friday at the funeral home. Memorials in Carla’s honor may be made to National Wildlife Federation, PO Box 1583, Merrifield VA 22116.
Carla was born August 16, 1952 in Pana, the daughter of Carl A. and Kathryn E. (Bass) Kates. She married David Ray Spitzer and they shared 29 years together along with their daughters. Carla later married Mike Carter and he preceded her in death.
Carla worked as a Customer Service Representative for Ameren for over 15 years until her retirement. She had a love for animals and wildlife and truly enjoyed all animals from dogs, cats (big and small) to feeding birds in the back yard. Carla also enjoyed gardening and taking care of her flowers. She was passionate about her community, serving as a Girl Scout Leader for many years, impacting hundreds of young girls through Girl Scouts. Carla was a Friend of Bill W for over 25 years, impacting countless other people. She most treasured time spent with her family, especially her daughters and granddaughter.
Surviving are her daughters: Beth Spitzer and Kari Spitzer (Elliot Green), both of Decatur; granddaughter, Eyllah; sister, Connie Lake of Decatur; brother, Dennis (Pam) Kates of Decatur; and many nieces and nephews.
Carla was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, Mike Carter.
