Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 10, at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur, with visitation one hour prior to services, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery with military rites by the Macon County Honor Guard.Memorials may be made to the Macon County Honor Guard or to Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church.Carl was born in Springfield, IL, on March 28, 1930, the son of Fred and Marie (Hardy/Burgess) Sperl. His father died when Carl was 2 years old and his mother later married Joseph H. Burgess.Carl was a Korean War veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. He worked at Cash Valve, Borg Warner, and then retired from Taylorville Correctional Facility after 15 years of service. Carl was a member of Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed camping with his family. Carl married Lucille Vest on September 12, 1958. She preceded him in death.Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law Dorothy and Tom Brabender of Mt. Zion, IL; stepsons Jim and George Hays, both of Decatur; brother Bill (Nelle) Burgess of NC; and sister Pat (Darrell) Weikle of Maroa. Carl enjoyed his grandchildren Mindy (Larry) Humphrey of Mt. Zion, and Andrew (Marcie) Brabender of Goshen, IN, and his five great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by parents, stepfather, wife, and grandson Jason. "
