Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M., Saturday, August 2, 2008, at Brintlinger & Earl Funeral Home, Decatur, Illinois, with visitation 5 to 8 P.M., Friday, August 1, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery, Decatur, Illinois. Memorials may be made to Niantic Christian Church or Macon County Conservation District.Carl was born in Beardstown, IL on January 17, 1922 to Archibald and Bessie (Jacobsen) Dunn. He graduated from Beardstown High School in 1939. He graduated from University of Illinois in 1943. He married Mary Carolyn Oldweiler on December 2, 1950 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Decatur. She preceded him in death in 1987.In his youth he worked on the family farm and raised cattle in the Illinois River valley. As a university student, he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, ROTC, and was senior manager of the Fighting Illini football team during the 1942-43 season. He traveled by train with the team to various Big Ten towns and managed equipment, transportation, and finances. After completing his degree in marketing, he entered the army. He was with the 773rd tank destroyer battalion and attained the rank of captain.On his return from World War II, he moved to Niantic where he operated a grain farm. He was a member of Niantic Christian Church. He served as director for the State Bank of Niantic, Macon County Farm Bureau, and Macon County Soil and Water Conservation District. He was a trustee for the Macon County Conservation District. He served as president of the Niantic-Harristown School Board, was a founding member of the Niantic Swim Club, was a member of the Niantic Civic Club and the Niantic elevator coffee club.He leaves three sons: Carl, Jr., his daughters Yael Costilla and husband Mark and Carolyn, all of Houston, Texas; John and Carmen, their children Robert, Catherine, Henry, and Elizabeth, of Niantic; Steven and Nancy, their sons Evan and Andrew, of Harristown. He is also survived by his brother and his wife, George and Frances Dunn of Urbana and many nieces and nephews.Carl loyally attended his grandchildrens concerts and games. He was a world traveler and avidly read American history. Until his death, he was active in the farm operation and continued the tradition of fixing Sunday dinner for his family.
