Betty Wheatley, 93, of Decatur, Illinois passed, following a brief illness, at Springfield Memorial Hospital, on Saturday morning, September 7,2024.
Born Betty Virginia Schmidt on August 30, 1931 In Decatur, Illinois, Betty lived a full and abundant life raising a family, working, traveling, helping others ... and, as many know, knitting. In the last decade she knitted thousands of stocking hats for those in need.
Betty leaves behind her brother Gerald R. Schmidt and his wife Sandy, son Jay W. Dikeman, step daughters, Jacqui Wheatley Guiffrida and her husband Walter and Jenny Augustin and her husband Karl; grandchildren: Ashley Hinton, Taylor Dikeman, Amber Townsend and her husband Jeff, Susan Nerenberg and her husband Derek and Nicole Webb and her husband Adam; six great grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
And Betty leaves behind a world of friends and memories.
Betty worked at Mueller Company and served on numerous local boards and volunteered for various organizations including PEO, the Mueller Museum, the Symphony Guild and much more.
Betty loved traveling with friends and her late husband, Thomas A. Wheatley. Recently when asked to list the places in Europe she had traveled, Betty stated, "it would be easier to list where I haven't been".
A Celebration of Life for Betty will be held Saturday, September 14, 2024 at 11:30 am at First Congregational Church UCC, 3465 N. MacArthur Road, Decatur, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, Betty wished donations be sent to:
New Millenium Faith Ministries, 1415 N. Edward Street, Decatur, Illinois, 62525 to be used toward the development of their Tavera Learning Center.
Betty will be laid to rest, at a later date, with her husband, Thomas A. Wheatley, at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
