Betty Myers

September 8, 1923 — May 23, 2013

Betty J. Myers, 89, of Decatur, IL, passed away at 1:50 a.m., Thursday, May 23, 2013. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur, IL, officiated by a dear friend, Pastor Phil Hansen, with visitation one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery in Sullivan, IL. Betty was born September 8, 1923, the daughter of William and Catherine Hawbaker. She graduated from Decatur High School and Browns Business College. Betty retired from Newman & Ullman and was the former owner of the Mt. Zion Custard Shop. Betty was a warm, caring, compassionate lady to family and friends alike. Her spirit was always happy and she loved to laugh. She loved fishing, card playing, and traveling. At age 50, she met and married her husband William (Bill) Myers. She and Bill were very happy. They kept her mother Catherine (Kate) with them until she passed away at age 95. Bill didn't like to fish, but he took Betty and Kate fishing while he read a book. Anytime a friend or family member wanted to go, be it fishing or a trip, they were automatically invited. They traveled around the United States from coast to coast in their motor home, seeing the country. On Kate's 80th birthday she told Betty she was now retired from cooking, and Betty learned to be a fabulous cook. She was particularly a favorite of the children, who knew she had M&M's in her pockets! Surviving are her nieces and nephews: Elsie Sorenson of Forsyth, IL, Verl Dean Hawbaker and wife Jackie of Amarillo, TX, Jerry Hawbaker and wife Barb, Carolyn Thompton and husband Steve of Larkspur, CO, Kathy Tully and husband John of Amarillo, TX. Also surviving are stepsons William (Bill) Myers and wife Darlene, Mike Myers of Lexington, KY; and stepdaughter Beverly Nixon and husband Dale. She is also survived by loving great-nieces and nephews, and step grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Bill, her brothers Verl Hawbaker, Dean Hawbaker, Paul Hawbaker, nephew Ronald Hawbaker, and her stepdaughter-in-law Debbie Myers. Her last three years were at Heartland Healthcare Center where she made many friends. Her caretakers were excellent. She had her very special friends, namely nurse Connie Meyers, aides Jatavia Stewart and Stephanie Bogle, physical therapist Jose (O.C.) and many others. "
