Bernice A. (Fort) Roper, 84, of La Place, IL passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at Heritage Health Center in Mt. Zion, IL. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, March 25 in Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur with visitation one hour prior to services at the funeral home. A memorial service for Albert and Bernice will be held at a later date in Arkansas and burial will follow at Markham Cemetery in Egypt, AR where most of Bernice’s family is laid to rest. Memorials in Bernice’s memory may be given to the LaPlace Church of the Brethren, LaPlace, IL. Bernice was born in Egypt, AR on July 14, 1932, the daughter of Ernest “Pete” Charles and Viola “Ollie” M. (Cook) Fort. She married Albert E. Roper on December 8, 1958 in Hoxie, AR. He preceded her in death on September 18, 2014. Bernice enjoyed gardening, cooking (she was an excellent Southern cook), collected dolls and Beanie Babies. Above all, she treasured her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She was a member of the LaPlace Church of the Brethren, LaPlace, IL. Surviving are son, Steve (Jayne) Roper of Alhambra, IL; one daughter, Barbara Urban of Sherman, TX; two grandchildren, Nicholas Urban of Arlington, TX and Hannah Urban of Irving, TX; great-grandchildren, Layila, Cadence “Kandy Kane” and Hailey Skye; one brother, Shorty Fort and one sister, Geneva Burch both of Jonesboro, AR. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, husband Albert; two brothers, Bill and Bud Fort; and three nephews, Crockett, Timothy, and Tony Fort. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Heritage Health and Harbor Light Hospice and Dr. Anthony McCormack for taking special care of their mother. "
