Ben J. Berner, 88, of Decatur, died at 8:30 AM Wednesday at “Generations” at McKinley Place. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, May 20, 2019, at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, with visitation from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Burial: Graceland Cemetery. Ben was born January 25, 1931, in rural Shelby County. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and earned the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was a Past Commander of V.F.W Post #4431 in Pana. He married Sue Ashcraft in Decatur on December 22, 1972. Most of his entire working career was spent with Mueller Co, as a machinist. He is survived by his wife: Sue, of Decatur; 2 daughters: Cheryll (Shannon) Henry , and Betty Jo (Robert) Maples; grandchildren: Corey Wicker, Chelsey (Justin) Bardfield with great-grandchildren: Aubrey and Brody, and Benny Durbin, Ryan (Beth) Musser, and 7 additional great-grandchildren; brothers: Clarence, Donald, and David Berner; sisters: Marilyn Prosser, Rose Thomas, Carolyn Young, and Donna Berner. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, and 2 sisters. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society, or the charity of choice.
